Music and exercise

Rhythm that keeps you moving. Turn it up and let the beat carry the next set.

What the studies found

Some
  • The largest review (139 studies, 3,599 people) found that music made exercise more enjoyable, lowered how hard it felt, gave a small lift in performance and slightly more efficient oxygen use.[1]
  • The lift in performance was larger in exercise than in competitive sport, and larger with fast-tempo music.[1]

Who took part

Mostly healthy young adults in lab and gym studies, plus some athletes.
